Algusta “Gus” Benningfield, age 84

Algusta “Gus” Benningfield, of Campbellsville, died Sunday, September 3, 2017 in Louisville following a sudden illness.

He was born in Marion County to the late Omer and Exie Mae Reynolds Benningfield on January 25, 1933.  He was 84 years, 7 months and 8 days of age.

Gus worked for 37 ½ years for Fruit of the Loom and farmed in his spare time.  After retirement, he took up mowing lawns which he still continued to do.  Because of his kind deeds for his neighbors, he was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Meadowbrook”.  Many people will remember him for passing out peppermints to all he met.  He also enjoyed woodworking and feeding the birds and wildlife that visited their backyard.

He was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church where he was a member of the Lowell Harris Sunday School Class who will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

On January 28, 1954, he married his wife of 63 years, Bettie Chelf who survives.  Also surviving are two brothers, Omer Benningfield, Jr. and his wife, Juanita and Ronald E. Benningfield and his wife, Imogene, both of Finley and five sisters, Lucille Ellis of Lebanon, Lena Mae Gupton, Pauline Judd and her husband, Gene, Pansey Barnett and Wanda Beck and her husband, David, all of Campbellsville; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Gus Benningfield will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 7th at the Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral with Dr. James Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery with casket bearers being, Joe DeSpain, Joe Luckett, Ben Aaron, Clarence Wilson, Randell Skaggs, Dixie Hamilton and Wayne Sprowles.

The family requests visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Capital Campaign at Campbellsville Baptist Church or Gideon Bibles.
