George Williams
George Williams of Campbellsville, son of the late John E. “Mose” Williams and Mary Edna Thompson Williams, was born February 29, 1924 in the Oak Grove section of Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 7:15 P.M., Friday, March 23, 2018 in Campbellsville. Age: 94
He professed faith in Christ and was baptized a member of Mt. Union Baptist Church in Green County, later changing his membership to Pleasant Union Baptist Church.
An article in the Central Kentucky News-Journal portrayed George’s accomplishments very well, stating, “besides being the first black police officer in Campbellsville to patrol outside the black neighborhood and the first black to hold an elected office in Taylor County, Williams was also the first black downtown business owner and the first black Greyhound Bus station owner in the entire United States. In 1986, voters in Taylor County elected Williams as jailer. He also drove a delivery truck for the Central Kentucky News-Journal.
He did that part-time for 32 years.”
He united in marriage to Allene Cowherd in 1944 and she preceded him in death on February 26, 1989.
He later united in marriage to Celia Robinson DeMers November 11, 1992.
Besides his wife, Celia Demers Williams of Campbellsville, he is survived by two daughters and one son: Rebecca Ann Henry and husband, James of Oswego, Illinois, Wanda Sue Webb and husband, Otis and Larry Williams and wife, Wendy of Campbellsville; five step-sons: Brian DeMers and wife, Debbie of Chugiac, Alaska, Dan DeMers and wife, Julie of Tumwater, Washington, David DeMers and wife, Monique of Elk Grove, California, Mike DeMers and wife, Vanessa of Camby, Indiana and Steve DeMers and wife, Elaine of Summersville; nineteen grandchildren: Lavelle Henry and Annetta Henry of Oswego, Illinois, Shon Williams of Flint, Michigan, Kelly Williams of Campbellsville, Lorry Pinkston of Louisville, LaTonya King of Campbellsville, Aaron DeMers of Campbellsville, Alethea DeMers of Yokosuka, Japan, Alex Woods of Columbus, Ohio, Sierra DeMers of Frankfort, Jacqueline DeMers of Frankfort, Kyli DeMers and Wyatt DeMers of Tumwater, Washington, Chris DeMers of Santa Margarita, California, Savannah Oaxaca-DeMers of Elk Grove, California, Asa DeMers of Camby, Indiana, Stephen DeMers and Amanda DeMers of Elizabethown and Meagan Molenkine of Oswego, Illinois; twenty-five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; special nephew, Randy Williams of Campbellsville; sister-in-law, Jewel Williams of Aurora, Illinois; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by five brothers: Carl Williams, Emmett Williams, Richard Williams, Ollie Homer Williams and Mitchell Williams and a grandson, Nivarian Shively.
