Rev. Otis C. Skaggs

Rev. Otis C. Skaggs of Campbellsville, son of the late Willie R. Skaggs and Virgie Bell Skaggs, was born November 27, 1933 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 7:30 A.M., Thursday, November 8, 2018 in Elizabethtown. Age: 84
He professed faith in Christ and was a member and former pastor of Grandview Baptist Church in Hardin County, Kentucky. Bro. Skaggs was called into the ministry in 1957 and ordained October 25, 1958. His first sermon was preached at Brush Creek Baptist Church September 15, 1957. He pastored for fifty-four years at several churches in Taylor, Green, Larue, Barren, Marion, Hardin, Casey and McCracken counties. While serving as pastor at Broadway Baptist Church in Paducah, he also ministered to over 1.5 million listeners across five states through radio and television programs. These daytime broadcasts were rated the number one listened in that area.
He studied the Bible over 111,000 hours, preached 7,789 sermons, officiated 367 funerals and baptized over 600 believers in Christ. He was a very talented pianist and organist and taught piano lessons for several years. He was the first bass singer for The Joymakers quartet from Greensburg. With no hesitation he would often play his banjo for the family’s entertainment. Bro. Skaggs was very well known for his teaching of the book of Revelation with great detail. He had a great love for his family, nature, gardening and homemade banana pudding. It could be said, that he was a very selfless person who never met a stranger Bro. Otis was a member of the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels and served on the Taylor County School Board from 1990 – 1994. He was a graduate of Campbellsville College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He united in marriage to Shirley Hunt on August 8, 1953.
Besides his wife, Shirley Skaggs of Campbellsville, he is survived by one son and three daughters: Jeff Skaggs, Linda Johnson and spouse, Tony of Campbellsville, Jill Shofner of Greensburg and Lana Guill and husband, Keith of Paducah; seven grandchildren: Justin Welch, Brandon Skaggs and fiancé, Allie Larimore and Brittoni Metcalf and husband, Thomas of Campbellsville, Megan Houston of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Benji Guill and fiancé Tara Martin, Lisa Kidd and husband, Steve and Lexi Guill of Paducah, Kentucky; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Kirtley of Montgomery, Illinois; two nieces and one nephew and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Doris Skaggs in infancy; two great-grandchildren: Elijah Metcalf and Raven Welch and a brother-in-law, Rob Kirtley.
