As the poet Mary Oliver once asked, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” And, for a life well-lived, the question becomes how do you capture the essence of that one wild and precious life in a few meager paragraphs? Yet, the time has come for us to make that attempt as MayDean Curry passed from this life on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Bluegrass Way Senior Living, where she was surrounded by her family and friends, both in person and in spirit.
MayDean was born on February 25, 1933 in Green County, KY to Lonnie and Evie Thompson Atwell. She was the baby of twelve children and we never tired of hearing the stories of the antics with her brothers and sisters. MayDean’s parents and all of her siblings have gone home to be with the Lord and we have faith that they are having a wonderful Atwell reunion in heaven!
On March 10, 1955, MayDean married the love of her life, Kendell Curry in Green County, KY. Kendell and MayDean were married for 56 years when Kendell passed away on October 31, 2010. Together Kendell and MayDean raised two children: Michael (Barbara) Curry, Pinehurst, NC and Tammy (Konrad) Bents, Edgar, WI. They were blessed with three grandchildren: Chris (Diana) Curry, Independence, KY, Taylor (Tom) Neary, Washington, DC, and Natalie Curry, New York City. They were also blessed with three great grandchildren, Jacob, Simon, and Rachel Curry of Independence, KY. MayDean is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
MayDean traveled through life with a humble servant’s heart. She was a servant leader, perhaps even prior to the term being coined. And, in her understated and unassuming way, MayDean positively impacted her community and church through sharing both talent and time. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church, joining when she and Kendall moved to Campbellsville in 1962. She participated in WMU, children’s Sunday School, Young at Heart and a multitude of church committees and activities. MayDean was also one of the first members of the Grief Ministry. She organized and prepared hundreds of meals for the family of church members and did so without complaint. She always considered it a way to serve her Lord through sharing a meal. She often shared laughter and tears with the family members and always shared God’s love.
MayDean possessed an unshakeable faith and eternal optimism. She believed in brighter days ahead, and in God’s goodness and His ultimate plan, which she relentlessly held onto in times of joy, times of struggle, and during all the seemingly ordinary days in between. She was, and will continue to be, a shining example to us and to all those whose paths she crossed.
Another well-known writer, A.A. Milne once said, “How lucky are we to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Genuinely fitting words for our family at this time. And, while we know MayDean will be missed immensely, by many, we rejoice for her, and feel deeply grateful to have known her as an extraordinary human . . . and most importantly, as our Mom.
Visitation for MayDean will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Parrott and Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville, Kentucky. A service of celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Campbellsville Baptist Church by Rev. Mark Price and Dr. Dwayne Norman. There will be a private burial in Pierce Community Cemetery in Green County. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Gideon Bibles or to Bluegrass Way Senior Living Activities Fund.
Our heartfelt and never ending gratitude goes to Mom’s special friend and caregiver, Judy, who loved her just like her own mother. We would also like to thank the staff at Bluegrass Way Senior Living. Mom received outstanding and truly compassionate care for the past six years while living at Bluegrass Way. The staff and residents became an important part of her family and we witnessed them not only taking care of Mom, but loving her in the process. She loved you all!
