Lynwood Newton

Posted by on Jul 9, 2023

Lynwood Newton, of Campbellsville, son of the late Mary Burress Newton and Johnny Gobel Newton was born November 27, 1928 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 1:44pm, Saturday, July 8, 2023 in Campbellsville at the age of 94. Lynwood grew up on Smith Ridge where he worked alongside his parents and siblings on the family farm. He married Juanita Benningfield on May 14, 1949. She preceded him in death on August 13, 2021.

Lynwood was always a hard worker. In his youth, he began walking back and forth from the farm into town to work at Eades Dairy, and once back home working until dark on farm chores. Lynwood would go on to get a job at Union Underwear Factory, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring. He also helped at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, assisting with ambulance runs and funerals before his second shift job as supervisor in the Knitting Room. That’s how he came to introduce his future son-in-law, Terry Dabney to his daughter, Judy.

Lynwood was a devoted member of Good Hope Baptist Church for his entire married life. He served as a deacon for many years and as the SundaySchool Superintendent for 67 years. He loved his church home and singing in the choir, especially those Easter and Christmas Cantatas.

After retirement, Lynwood worked more than ever. He had a deep drive to spread the Gospel. He did this through volunteering with the Bill Glass Prison Ministries, Gideons International, Taylor County Food Pantry, and the Emmaus Community.

He and Juanita visited many prisons, where they shared Christ’s love and built lasting relationships. They were often thrilled by the correspondence they continued to send and receive from inmates.  This experience opened Lynwood’s heart and he developed more empathy and compassion for those imprisoned.

Lynwood was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, church member, volunteer, and community member. He was an extrovert with few private thoughts, a hugger who loved to laugh and tell a tale and offer words of wisdom, as he saw it. He was genuine and positive, often responding to questions of concern that he was content and did not worry because worry was a waste of time. He rarely missed a sporting event or a chance to “love the fire out of your guitar” of one of his grandchildren or great grandchildren.

Lynwood is survived by his four children; Judy Dabney, Debbie Wade (Dee), Jeff Newton (Cathy) and Russ Newton (Krista); eight grandchildren: Tara Dabney, Traver Dabney (Kelli), Jenny Newton (Eric), Ben Newton (Sheere), Drew Newton (Megan), Seth Wade, Grant Newton and Macy Newton in addition to fourteen great grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Terry Dabney, three brothers and two sisters: Junior Newton, Vernon Newton, Bernice Smith, Bobby Newton and Betty Baker.

Geraldine Rafferty

Posted by on Jul 5, 2023

Geraldine Rafferty of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Chalon D. Sullivan and Lizzie Hunt Sullivan, was born September 9, 1930 in Taylor County, Kentucky.  She died at 10:45 P.M., Friday, June 30, 2023 in Campbellsville.   Age:  92

She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church.

She united in marriage to Dillard Rafferty January 11, 1946 and he preceded her in death July 1, 2013.

Geraldine Rafferty’s life on earth was the perfect example of being Jesus’ hands and feet. Her heart was a pure, kind, unselfish, servant’s heart. She enjoyed and loved people, always looking for the opportunity to brighten someone’s day, or to be a listening and caring ear when someone needed to talk.

Geraldine was a devoted and supportive wife to Dillard Rafferty for 67 years. She respected and supported her husband in all personal and business affairs throughout their marriage. Gardening, canning, and cooking kept her busy for many years.

Geraldine raised her three children in church, making sure they learned God’s word and how to follow it in their lives. She instilled the importance of honesty, charity, and work ethic.

Some of her greatest gifts shone when she became a “Granny.”  She was the absolute perfect Granny to her three grandchildren.  She blessed all three with a steady firm foundation of unconditional love. As a grandchild of Geraldine Rafferty, you were made to feel adored and special at all times, always welcomed, always loved.

Geraldine’s great-grandchildren knew her as “GiGi.”  To say she was a devoted GiGi would be an understatement.  Geraldine took tremendous pride in her four great-grandsons and was an active part of their lives.  She attended countless tractor pulls, baseball games, basketball games, graduations, even took a ride in a golf cart or two.  One great-grandson who stayed with his Nannie before he started school was close enough for her to take countless walks down the hill to see him.

Some favorite words Geraldine shared through the years:

“I had a wonderful husband.”

“I have a good family.”

“You girls got me good son-in-laws to take care of us.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“They are such good boys, especially in this day and time.”

“I’m a tough ole Sullivan.”

“No matter what happens, it is well with my soul.”

…And most recently…”I’ll be 93 my next birthday, if I make it, but it doesn’t matter.  I’ve put my faith in the Lord Jesus, and that’s the important thing.”

She is survived by one son and two daughters: Ron Rafferty and wife Mary Lou, Nancy Inman and husband Harold and Terry Brewer and husband Bill of Campbellsville; three grandchildren: Christy Parks and husband Scott, Mark Inman and wife Sara of Campbellsville and John David Inman of Lexington; four great-grandchildren: Tanner Parks, Cooper Parks, Logan Inman, and Colton Inman; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Geraldine was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister: Earl Sullivan and Naomi Sullivan.
