George Atkinson, age 78

George Gaither Atkinson, 78 years, 3 months and 8 days of Campbellsville, died Sunday, February 4, 2018 in Elizabethtown after an extended illness.

George was born on October 27, 1939 in Taylor County, the son of the late James and Roberta Penick Atkinson.   Also preceding him in death was his wife, Mary Catherine Atkinson as well as a son, James Robert Atkinson, two brothers, James Raymond Atkinson and Charles Lee Atkinson and a sister, Rachel Atkinson Curry.

For many years he worked at Fruit of the Loom and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, horseshoes and cornhole.    He was a member of Bethel AME church.

Surviving is a son, George Anthony Atkinson of Lexington and two daughters, Deborah Ann Atkinson and Michelle Allen both of Lebanon and two sisters, Alberta Thornton and her husband James of Greensburg and Geraldine Anderson of Connecticut as well as 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

The funeral service for George Gaither Atkinson will be Friday, February 9, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. James T. Washington officiating.    Burial will follow in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

The wake will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.

Ruth Halcomb of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ted Allen and Dona Hale Allen, was born July 11, 1939, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. She died at 9:11 A.M., Wednesday, January 31, 2018 in Campbellsville. Age: 78
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Elk Horn Baptist Church.
Ruth was a retired supervisor from Adam & H. Bartle Sewing in Richmond, Indiana
She united in marriage to John Halcomb September 22, 1959 and he preceded her in death February 4, 2003.
She is survived by one sister and two brothers: Velma Bond and husband, Curt of Campbellsville, Gillus Allen of Orlando, Kentucky and Virgil Allen of Richmond, Indiana; three special nieces: Debbie Gilpin, Gina Byrd and husband, Donnie Wayne, Sara Mardis and husband, Justin of Campbellsville; several other nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters: Eddie Allen, Teddie Allen, Willie Allen, William Allen, Easter Allen, Laura Owens Allen, Gertrude Smith, Anna Lee Mullins, Marie Allen, Delbert Allen and Orba Allen.

Fannie England Hall of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ira England and Sular Janes England, was born May 28, 1926, in Taylor County, Kentucky. She died at 6:45 P.M., Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in Mayfield. Age: 91
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Fannie was a retired employee of Kroger in Campbellsville after many years of service.
She united in marriage to Carl Hall May 29, 1954 and he preceded her in death April 12, 2007.
She is survived by two daughters: Terrie Hall of Campbellsville and Debbie Samples and husband, Kenny of Mayfield; three grandchildren: Ken Samples and wife, Samantha of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Grant Samples and wife, Katie and Anna Samples of Mayfield; two great-grandchildren: Connor Samples of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Mason Samples of Mayfield; one brother, Herbert England of Campbellsville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Julia Ann Hall and five brothers and two sisters: Ira England, Jr., James England, Charles England, Raymond England, Truman England, Avis Bright and Mary Lollar.

Rev. Charles E. Harris, Sr.

Rev. Charles E. Harris, Sr. of Campbellsville, son of the late Charles Lee Harris and Mattie Sappington Harris, was born January 16, 1920 near Saltillo, Mississippi. He died at 3:55 A.M., January 27, 2018 at the age of ninety-eight in Elizabethtown.
Rev. Harris served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps as a mechanic during World War II. He was a Bible scholar and had studied at different schools in Mississippi. After his graduation from Union University in 1955, he taught in Jefferson, Webster and Taylor Counties. Rev. Harris also pastored churches in Mississippi and in several counties in Kentucky including: Union, Webster, Hart and Taylor Counties after attending the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville. In 2010, he received the honor of Pastor Emeritus for Friendship Baptist Church.
Charles united in marriage to Annie Matkins May 17, 1941. After sixty-eight years of marriage, she preceded him in death April 8, 2009.
He is survived by three daughters and three sons: Barbara Harris Ramsey of Dixon, Dorothy Kay Bowers and husband, Mike of Creedmoor, North Carolina, Deborah Harris Simpson of Campbellsville, Charles E. Harris, Jr. and wife, Carol Freer Harris of Morganfield, John Allen Harris and William Larry Harris of Campbellsville; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Harris in 1956, an infant grandson, Joshua Bowers; two sons-in-law: William “Bill” Simpson and John S. Ramsey, Jr. and a daughter-in-law, Dianne Owens Harris.

Jalisa Shanee Lavee Smith, age 29

Jalisa Shanee Lavee Smith, 29 years, 11 months and 13 days of age, of Louisville died Thursday, January 25, 2018, in Louisville.

Jalisa was born on February 12, 1988 in Louisville the daughter of Jaron S. Teague and Rechel Smith-Calvillo, both of Louisville.   She was a former student of the University of Louisville, loved shopping, cooking and especially taking care of her boys.     She was a very friendly lady with a very outgoing personality which shined with her love of organizing family gatherings.   She had made a profession of faith in Christ several years ago and was a member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she is survived by two sons, Milo Helton and Silas Helton, her grandmothers, Barbara Turner and Helen Boyd and step-father, Miguel Sanchez all of Louisville.  Also surviving are her aunts, Yolanda Garay, Louisville, Jarella Blake, Texas and Cathy Estes, Greenville; an uncle Junior Smith, Louisville; a great-aunt, Evelyn Turner and great-uncles, George Turner and Robert Turner and several cousins.

Funeral services for Jalisa Smith will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30th at Pleasant Union Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Caldwell officiating.   Burial will follow in the church cemetery with bearers being, Junior Smith, Miguel Sanchez, Adrian Turner, Damon Forcelledo, Daniel Arellana and Cameron Turner.

The family requests visitation on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the funeral at the church.

Mel Gilbert

Mel Gilbert of Campbellsville, son of the late Arthur Gilbert and Lottie Howard Gilbert, was born April 14, 1940, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He died at 4:35 P.M., Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family at age 77.
He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Green River Memorial Baptist Church.
Mel was a former employee of Cox Interior and owned and operated a cleaning business for many years. He was very active in the Lions Club where he received several awards for his many years of service.
He united in marriage to Marla Whitley February 20, 1981.
Besides his wife of thirty-seven years, Marla Gilbert, he is survived by one daughter and five sons: Lisa Blandford and husband, Tommy of Lebanon, Brad Akridge and wife, Regina of Campbellsville, Brian Gilbert and wife, Christy of St. Mary, Georgia, Greg Gilbert and wife, Lisa of Brentwood, Tennessee, Tim Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia and Jeff Gilbert and wife, Nicole of Germany; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Earls of Bowling Green; his mother in-law, Lorene Whitley of Campbellsville; two brothers-in-law: Roger Whitley and wife, Kathy of Campbellsville and Robert Smith of Bowling Green; one sister-in-law, Surple Gilbert of Gallant, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister: Gerald Gilbert and Patricia Smith.
The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to Hosparus for the wonderful care given to the whole family.

Beverly Curry, age 52

Beverly Ann Curry, 52 years, 11 months and 26 days of age of Campbellsville, died at her home on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.

Beverly was born on January 29, 1965 to Joe and Jane Bright Curry of Campbellsville, who survive.    She enjoyed spending time on the beach, working in her garden with her flowers and was often found shopping, especially for shoes when not spending time with her cats and dogs that she loved.

She was predeceased by a brother, Barry Allen Curry and a sister, Patricia Jo Curry.

Surviving are her children, a son, Elliott Chase Benningfield and daughter, McKenzie Chance Plummer, both of Campbellsville and four sisters, Diana Clark and husband Brad of Bowling Green, Betty Montgomery of Greer, South Carolina, Cheryl Curry of Campbellsville, Melissa Nutgrass and husband Mike of Shelbyville as well as two brothers, Joe A Curry, Jr. and John Curry and wife Karen all of Campbellsville.   A host of other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.

Cozetta Sprowles passed away to a better home on January 24, 2018 at 8:15 pm. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Olyn R. Sprowles, of Campbellsville, KY. She is also survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Shannon and Randy Kennedy, Holly and Christopher Howell. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Scarlett Kennedy, Broxton Kennedy, Hampton Kennedy, Waverly Kennedy, Titus Howell, and Roman Howell. She was preceded in death by her parents (Glen and Cassie Hughes), two brothers (Douglas and Greg Hughes), and two sisters (Linda Hughes and Louise Wood). She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law (Buddy and Diane Hughes), and one brother-in-law (Donnie Wood). She is also survived by her best friend of 61 years, Shirley Matney, and a host of family and friends. Brent Turner, 51

Brent Turner, the son of the late Billy Joe and Nettie Furkins Turner, was born Monday, December 5, 19676 in Columbia and departed this life on Monday, January 22, 2018 in Lexington at the UK Medical Center. She was 51 years, 1 month and 18 days of age.
He was a welder and enjoyed riding four wheelers, riding horse and family and friends.
Survivors include a son: William Turner of Columbia and a host of other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister: Monica Turner Heitz.
The funeral service for Brent Turner will be conducted Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. EST in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home with cremation to follow.
Visitation after 10 AM EST on Saturday at the funeral home.

William W. Long, Sr.

William W. Long, Sr. of Campbellsville, Kentucky, son of the late William Long and Mary Wolfe Peters, was born August 10, 1925 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. He departed this life on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee after an extended illness. He was 92 years of age.
Mr. Long was a World War II Veteran and was honorably discharged after two years in the Navy. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with an Engineering Degree. As a young man, Mr. Long united in marriage to Marcella Whitlock who preceded him in death September 12, 2009. Mr. Long was the owner of W. W. Long Oil Company in Campbellsville, Kentucky from 1968 until he retired.
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing six children: Bill Long and wife, Donna Davenport Long of Campbellsville, Anne Roddick of Brentwood, Tennessee, Marci Long of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jane McKinley and husband, Jeff of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Alice Carnes and husband, Kevin of Louisville and Martha Cox and husband, John of Franklin, Tennessee; four brothers, one sister, fifteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends, including all the neighbors in Johnsport Subdivision.
He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mike Roddick.
