Marsa K. “Mousie” Cox, age 68

Marsa K. “Mousie” Cox, age 68, of Elk Horn passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at her home after a short illness.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Elk Horn Baptist Church.  She had worked for General Electric and Fruit of the Loom.  She enjoyed sewing and canning as well as outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting ginseng and mushrooms.

She is survived by her husband Derald Cox, a son, Rondall Cox and his wife, Gail of Elk Horn and a daughter, Lora Baker, and her husband Dean, of Knifley; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Ruby McDonald, of Louisville, Carl Ford, of Shepherdsville, Ina Humphress of Yuma, Galoris Hedgespeth and Lana Ford of Campbellsville, Shirley James of Indiana and Eric Ford and Gary Ford of Campbellsville along with several other relatives.

She was born April 3, 1948 in Taylor County to the late Rue and Bertha Ford and was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Daniel Ford, Ray Ford, Anita Elmore, Wilma Combs, Nadine Ford, Wilbur Ford, Rue Ford, Jr., Ena Hicks and Zelphia Reece.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 7th at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home with Bro. Brian Rafferty officiating.  Serving as pallbearers are, Casey Gilbert, Cory Cox, Daniel Whitham, Cody Proffitt, Stephen Furkin, Scott Cochran, David Agee and Tony Cox.  Burial will follow in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

The family requests visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.  Expressions of sympathy are suggested to WHAS Crusade for Children and may be made at the funeral home.

Eddie Abell, 63

abell-picMr. Edward Lee “Eddie” Abell of Eastridge Cemetery Rd in Adair County crossed over to heaven on January 27, 2017. Born March 16, 1953 in Louisville to Sylvia Rowena Eastridge Abell and Johnnie Lee Abell, he was 63 years, 10 months, and 11 days of age. Raised and loved from age ten by his mother and dad, Sylvia Rowena Sween and Clarence Sween, in Denver, Colorado, he became a tried but true fan of the Denver Broncos NFL team.

After returning to Kentucky in the early 1970’s, he married Barbara Humpress on June 13, 1975. He professed faith in Christ and was baptized in 2008, and was a member of, Christie Chapel United Methodist Church in Knifley, KY.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Abell; two daughters, Kristi (Sean) Kelly of Lake Orion, MI, Jennifer (Brandon) Hovious of Knifley; one son, Edward L. (Samantha) Abell of Altus, OK; five grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Devin Kelly, Logan Perry, Madison and Charlotte Abell; three chosen grandchildren, Jonathan Lee, Hayden, and Siya; one sister, Cathy Kingdollar of Campbellsville; two brothers, John (Renee) Abell of Columbia, and Ernie Abell of Norfolk, VA; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Clarence Sween, his mother, Rowena Sween, and a brother, Greg Abell.

A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Abell will be conducted on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 11:00 AM EST in the Christie Chapel United Methodist Church, 8068 Elkhorn Rd, Knifley, KY. Bro. Steve Janes will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Eastridge Cemetery, Columbia, KY.

johnson-picMr. Jason Eli “Jay” Johnson of Campbellsville entered into eternity on January 28, 2017 after a sudden illness. Born in Louisville on December 8, 1974 to Carroll (Kinser) Robertson and the late James Julian Johnson, he was 42 years, 1 month, and 20 days of age. His life followed a big-hearted and gentle path, and he spent much of it searching for peace and tranquility. As a father and CEO of the Happy Thoughts Collective, he would go from Tonka trucks to tea parties at every opportunity. Mr. Johnson studied and respected the Cherokee Nation and was honored with a farewell service by an elder of the native nations.

He leaves to cherish his memory:

He departed this life on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the University of Louisville Hospital at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 13 days. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Dunnville Church of God. He was the owner and operator of a sealcoating and tree trimming business for several years in Taylor County.

Mary Belle Gaines of Campbellsville, daughter of the late John Wesley Livesay and Sarah Belle Castle Livesay, was born November 28, 1926, in Knox County, Kentucky. She died at 9:25 A.M., Monday, January 30, 2017 in Campbellsville. Age: 90
Mary Belle was a retired lunchroom employee of Campbellsville Independent School System. She enjoyed being around the children and cherished the times working at the school.
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church. She was very active in the United Methodist Women and loved her church.
Any time her grandchildren had activities, she was always in attendance. Spending time with her family was her first priority.
She united in marriage to James Allen “Jimmy” Gaines July 10, 1943 and he preceded her in death November 23, 2009.
Mary Belle is survived by one son, Allen Lee Gaines of Campbellsville; three grandchildren: Kim Ford and husband, Todd and Josh Gaines and wife, Desirae of Campbellsville and Matthew Gaines of Louisville; one great-granddaughter, Harper Marie Gaines of Campbellsville; daughter-in-law, Diane Kay Gaines of Campbellsville; one sister, Mary Lois Reynolds of Campbellsville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Mary Belle was also preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters: Robert Livesay, Henry Clay Livesay, Joe Livesay, Thomas Livesay, Adrian Livesay, Haskell Livesay, Coy Livesay, Ova Newberry and Sylvia Sallee.

Edward Lilburn Cox

Edward Lilburn Cox of Somerset, formerly of Campbellsville, departed this life to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on January 27, 2017, at Hospice of Lake Cumberland, Somerset, Kentucky. He was born on September 3, 1929 to Cora (Bowen) Cox and Rufus Cox in Taylor County, Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Sue (Williams) Cox, his sons, Greg Cox and his wife Sarah of Somerset, and Jeff Cox of Lexington, his grandsons, Caleb, Cullen, and Tristan Cox of Somerset, and his granddaughter Emily Gridley of Lexington. He is also survived by his nephews Ronald Lewis Cox of Columbia, and Jason Cox of Taylor County.
Edward graduated from Taylor County High School in 1947 and pursued his teaching degree at Campbellsville College and the University of Kentucky. His studies were interrupted by his induction into the US Army on April 28, 1953, for service in the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Alaska and assigned to the US Army’s 12th Tank Company, the Dirty Dozen, at Fort Richardson. Upon his discharge on April 27, 1955, he completed his education, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree, followed by a Rank I Certification.
Edward married Sue (Williams) Cox, of Adair County, Kentucky, on April 14, 1956. He and Sue were Charter Members of Saint Andrew United Methodist Church, Campbellsville. Edward taught Sunday School there for nearly 50 years. From an early age he professed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Edward dedicated 43 years to the education of the children of Taylor County. At age 19, he taught in the one room Merrimac School while attending college. He taught Sixth Grade at Taylor County Elementary, served as Assistant Principal at Taylor County High for one year, then spent nearly 25 years as Principal there. He retired in 1998 as an Instructional Supervisor. As Instructional Supervisor, he particularly enjoyed his time with the inherently lively and joyful Preschool Program.
Following Sue’s retirement from Campbellsville Schools in 1999, they began to travel extensively spending warm winters in Okeechobee, Florida. They loved traveling with family and were never too many weeks away from a trip to Gatlinburg or Branson. Edward often ventured off the beaten path when traveling, seeing new sights along the way. He seldom took the same route twice. When not traveling, he could be found tinkering in his shop or working in the yard.
Edward was preceded in death by his father, Rufus Cox, his mother, Cora (Bowen) Cox, his brothers Rodney and James D (Jay) Cox, and his nephew Doug Cox.
A gathering of family and friends will take place on Wednesday, February 1st, from 5 PM-8PM, at the Parrott and Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville, KY. The celebration of his life will take place at Parrott and Ramsey at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 2nd, with his burial following at Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

Age: 86
He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Poplar Grove United Methodist Church.
Stoy was a retired employee of Kentucky Trailers in Louisville and was also a farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.
He united in marriage to Hazel Underwood November 30, 1963.
Besides his wife, Hazel Warren of Greensburg, he is survived by two sons and two daughters: Doug Warren of Campbellsville, Glenda Warren, and Margie Walker and husband, Troy of Greensburg and Eli Warren and companion Kristy Parsons of Buffalo; six grandchildren: Casey Milby and husband, Jonathan, Natasha Walker, Shauna Walker and Evan Walker of Greensburg, Brandi Bowen and husband, Andrew and Abigail Warren of Hodgenville; two great-granddaughters: Ariel Underwood of Hodgenville and Gertie Milby of Greensburg; one brother and two sisters: Gilbert Warren and wife, Agnes of Campbellsville, Agnes Gunter and husband, Rollin of Franklin, Indiana and Bernice Stillwell of Hodgenville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Stoy was also preceded in death by three brothers: Roy Warren, Wilburn Warren and Linzie Herman Warren.

scott-alsager Mr. Scott Alan Alsager of Campbellsville died on January 27, 2017 at his home. Born on December 19, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa to the late Kenneth H. and Marjorie J. (Booth) Alsager, he was 61 years, 1 month, and 8 days of age. He was a retired electronic engineer. On April 30, 1977, he married Diania R. Lee, who survives. Mr. Alsager professed faith in Christ and was of the Lutheran faith.

Besides his wife, Diania R. Alsager, he is also survived by a son, Nicholas Alsager and wife Renee of Campbellsville; a daughter, Melinda Young and husband Robbie of Magnolia; six grandchildren, Jaide, Chloe, Rhyder, Maggie, Rhylee, and Xavier.

Mr. Alsager requested cremation and will be inurned in the Campbellsville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at a later date. There was no public visitation.lrpetty-logo

Brian Travis Giles, age 45, of Elk Horn died Friday, January 27, 2017 at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville following an illness.

Brian was born April 16, 1971 in Edinburgh, Indiana to the late Travis and Mildred Seaborne Giles.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Eric Edwards. He worked for several years at Fruit of the Loom and later at Hendrickson in Lebanon.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.

He is survived by his daughters, Sara Giles, Grace Giles and Emily Giles, all of Campbellsville; his fiancé, Leslie Morris and her daughters, Kailey and Karley Morris of Elk Horn and a sister, Valerie Gamboa and her husband, Al, of Lexington.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 30th at the Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Callahan Cemetery.

Melvin Douglas Martin, 86

martin-pic Mr. Melvin Douglas “Doug” Martin of Campbellsville was born on February 1, 1930 in Taylor County to the late Cloyd and Amelia (Jones) Martin. He departed this life on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Grandview Nursing and Rehab Center, being 86 years, 11 months, and 25 days of age. Mr. Martin professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Green River Memorial Baptist Church. He was veteran of the Korean conflict and served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. Mr. Martin was a distinguished farmer and conservationist and had received many local, state, and national commendations and awards for his dedication to agriculture and conservation education. He was a board member for the Taylor County Conservation District, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the American Legion, a member of Pitman Masonic Lodge No. 124 F. & A. M., and a charter member of the Taylor County Fair Board. He married Reba Allen on June 8, 1951, and they shared their lives until his passing.

He leaves to cherish his memory:
