Pearl Gumm, age 92, of Campbellsville, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Campbellsville.

She was born, Beulah Pearl Melton in Clinton County, Kentucky to the late William McKinley and Vertia Lawhorne Melton on June 2, 1922.  She had lived in Campbellsville since 1939 and was a member of South Campbellsville Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Gumm and two sons, Robert Lee and Wesley Alford Gumm.

She is survived by a son, James William Gumm and his wife, Elizabeth, of Kearney, Missouri; a daughter, Sheila Mae Gumm, of Campbellsville, five grandchildren, Carol Jean Brown, Campbellsville, Amy Whitner and her husband David of Kearney, Missouri, Bridgette Jones and her husband, Kim of Campbellsville, Roberta Foster and her husband, Steve of O’Fallon Missouri and Jennifer Perkins and her husband, Tony of Overland Park, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 11th at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home with Bro. Shaun Caudill officiating.  Burial will follow at Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers will be David Whitner, Steve Foster, Tony Perkins, Josh Simpson, Ryan Sears and Kim Jones.

The family requests visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 10th at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.

PuryearWillis Benningfield Benningfield was born in Taylor County, Kentucky, February 17, 1933.He died at 8:58 P.M., Friday, February 6, 2015, in Louisville. Age: 81
He professed faith in Christ and was of the Methodist Faith.
He was a retired farmer and served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by three brothers: Sam Benningfield and wife, Mildred of Campbellsville, Walter Benningfield and James Benningfield and wife, Burnestine of Elkhorn; one niece and one nephew: Joan Walls and husband, Donald of Campbellsville and Roger Benningfield and wife, Karen of Elkhorn; several other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two half –brothers: Victor Benningfield and Clarence Benningfield and one nephew, Stanley Benningfield.

Virginia Askren of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ben Harrison Perkins and Virginia Pike Perkins, was born July 28, 1919, in Taylor County, Kentucky. She died at 8:28 A.M., Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in Campbellsville. Age: 95
She professed faith in Christ and was of the Separate Baptist Faith.
She was a retired employee of the Holiday Inn Gift Shop in Louisville.
She united in marriage to John Askren September 4, 1964. He preceded her in death November 7, 2000.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Reynolds of Campbellsville; six step-children: Jerry Askren, Bradley Askren and Becky McKinley of Indiana, Terry Askren and Kevin Askren of Georgia and Kim Skees and husband, Jim of Crestwood, Kentucky; one granddaughter, Debbie Reynolds of Campbellsville; several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Loretta Sharp and Margaret Barnett of Campbellsville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters: Edwin Perkins, Venetta Barnett, Ida Belle Corbin, Irene Bault and Mattie Perkins.

Billy Logan Speer, 83

Billiy SpeerMr. Billy Logan Speer of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Campbellsville, passed from this life on February 1, 2015 in Florida. He was 83 years, 9 months, and 21 days of age. He was the son of the late Clarence and Cleo Speer. Mr. Speer was a long-time Campbellsville businessman and entrepreneur. Among other things, he founded Speer Systems, a manufacturer of industrial equipment, and was the former owner of the local Fox34 television station.
Mr. Speer also loved traditional music. He was a founding member of Flakespear, a bluegrass band and TV production company, that was inducted into the Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. He was also well-known for his hand-made aluminum banjo’s; one of which he presented to Kentucky Governor Paul Patton in Frankfort.
Mr. Speer was a veteran of the Korean War, and served his country honorably as a wire sergeant in the United States Army.

Cremation rites were accorded. A graveside military service and celebration of life ceremony will be conducted at the Brookside Cemetery in Campbellsville on Saturday, June 27, 2015.

He was a retired diesel mechanic and former milk truck driver.
He united in marriage to Lois Sexton May 25, 1955. She preceded him in death July 30, 2002.

Jane Douglas Phillips of Midland, Texas, formerly of Campbellsville, daughter of Douglas White and the late Edna Shreve White, was born September 13, 1950, in Taylor County, Kentucky. She died at 8:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 28, 2015, in Midland, Texas. Age: 64
She graduated from Taylor County High School. She then went on to receive an associate degree from Lindsey Wilson College.
She was a retired receptionist.
Jane enjoyed reading, shopping, and spending time with family, friends, and her pets. She was actively involved in her church, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, as well as the Red Hat Society.
She united in marriage to Fred Phillips May 2, 1975.
Besides her husband, Fred Phillips, she is survived by three daughters: Michelle Cockrell and husband, Kip of Weatherford, Texas, Danielle Bedingfield and husband, Jeremy of Midland, Texas and Amber Ervin and husband, Shannon of Brownwood, Texas; five grandchildren: Jonathan Bedingfield, Kymberly Bedingfield, Hunter Cockrell, Kaden Cockrell and Isabella Ervin; her father, Douglas White of Campbellsville; one brother, Danny White of Campbellsville; one aunt, Ann White Tucker of Horse Cave, and many other relatives and friends.

Tommy Wheeler, age 75

Tommy Wheeler, age 75 of Mannsville died Friday, January 30, 2015 in Lebanon.

He was born Thomas Leslie Wheeler on July 30, 1939 to the late Frank Leslie and Ada Mae Cooley Wheeler.  An auto mechanic, he loved driving late model stock cars and tinkering on things and doing odd jobs.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Vickie Sue Deering Wheeler and his sisters and brothers, Letha Ann Sallee, Elsie Mae Crews, Frances Crews, Junior Wheeler and David Lee Wheeler and a grandson.

He  is survived by his wife, Peggy Wheeler of Campbellsville, his children, Scott Wheeler, of Florida, Gayle Mings, Kelly Wheeler and his fiancé, Dolly Stinson, Steve Wheeler and his wife, Debra and Jerry Wheeler, all of Campbellsville and Tracy Dooley and her husband, Gary of Elk Horn; seven grandchildren and step children Donnie Bray and Dana Bray.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 2nd at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home with burial in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

Orville J. Hughes, age 77

hughes, orville croppedOrville Hughes, age 77, of Campbellsville died Sunday, January 25, 2015 at his home in Campbellsville following an illness.
Orville was born June 2, 1937 to the late Robert and Connie Elliott Hughes in Taylor County. He lived in Louisville for several years where he worked for American Standard. After retirement they moved back to Campbellsville where he enjoyed delivering cars for Auto Smart. He was a member of the Campbellsville Church of the Nazarene for over 35 years where he had served as treasurer and trustee.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Hughes, Jewel Hughes and Shirley Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Gilpin Hughes; two daughters, Linda Hughes and Charlene Gabbert of Campbellsville; a son, Andy Hughes and his wife, Becky, of Bloomington, IN; three grandchildren, David Gabbert and his wife, Jessica, Chelsea Hughes and Graham Hughes; two great-grandsons, Zachary and Evan Gabbert; four brothers, Wayne Hughes and his wife, Gladys of Casey County, Larry Hughes and his wife, Linda, of Knifley, Gary Hughes and his wife, Shirley of Elk Horn and Roger Hughes and his wife, Donna of Campbellsville and three sisters, Barbara Henderson, Mildred Druin and her husband, Barkley and Doris Reynolds, all of Campbellsville.
