Ethel Nelson

Ethel Nelson of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Vernon Russell and Elizabeth Nelson Russell, was born June 12, 1938 in Cass Lake, Minnesota.  She died at 10:45 P.M., Wednesday, February 19, 2025 in Campbellsville.   Age: 86

She professed faith in Christ and was a long-time member of Good Hope Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Rochelle, Illinois.  Ethel tried to set a good example and was always active and a willing worker at church; she loved planning social and church gatherings and had taught Sunday School for several years.

Ethel was a retired bookkeeper, seamstress and a homemaker.

She united in marriage to Frank D. Nelson June 19, 1954 and he preceded her in death March 22, 2005.

Ethel is survived by three daughters:  Debbie Janzen of Campbellsville, Lori Nelson and husband, Greg Long of Geneva, Illinois and Cheryl Rerko and husband, Tim of Batavia, Illinois; four grandchildren:  Bryce Nelson Blatz, Kyle Edward Blatz and wife, Ellen Anderson, Geddy Ann Rerko and Nelson Timothy Rerko; one sister, Dorothy Thompson of Florida; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters:  Francis Russell, Marie Smith and Louise Russell.

Janet C. Davenport

Janet Chambers Davenport, born November 15, 1927 in Ridgeway, Missouri, died peacefully on February 18, 2025 at home surrounded by her family. She moved to Louisville, Kentucky during her freshman year of high school and graduated from Atherton High School. She went on to earn a degree in English from the University of Louisville. She met her husband, William Randolph Davenport (Randy) at U of L, where he was in the V-12 Navy College Training Program during World War II. Together they lived in Missouri, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, finally settling in Kentucky for the last decades of their life. Married for 73 years, he preceded her in death in 2021.

Janet served alongside her husband as First Lady of Campbellsville College in Campbellsville, Kentucky for 19 years, receiving an Honorary Doctorate for the years of service to that institution. She was a wonderful hostess, beloved by faculty, staff, and students, for opening her home for holidays and special events, sharing her homemade meals and delicacies, and providing a listening ear.

Janet loved Jesus, her family, Campbellsville Baptist Church and the Gideon’s International. She was an avid Bible student, a wonderful writer, a detailed documentarian of travels, a gardener of her treasured irises, a seeker of knowledge, and a lover of crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

In addition to her husband, Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Lyons Chambers and Mason Little Chambers of Louisville, and her sister Colleen Singleton of Memphis, Tennessee.

She is survived by her family and many who loved her: four children, Liz Wilson (Bill), Martin Davenport (Sue), Mary Davenport, and Susan Davenport; seven grandchildren, BJ Wilson, Jon Wilson, Mike Wilson, Ben (Shannon) Stewart, Abbie (Daniel) Stovall, Jenny O’Leary (Mark), Julie Davenport; three great grandchildren, Noah Stewart, Braeden Stewart, William Stovall; Kim Byram, and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to Diana and Natalia, and to the Hosparus caregivers, especially April, Anita, and Cindy.

Private service for the family, officiated by Dr. Dwayne Norman on February 24, 2025, with internment in Brookside Cemetery in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

Gladys Katherine Mattingly

Gladys Katherine Mattingly

Gladys Katherine Mattingly of Campbellsville, the daughter of the late Ben Mitchell Whitlock and Mary Agnes Nelson Whitlock was born January 6, 1938, in Marion County, KY, and departed this life on February 16, 2025, in Louisville. She was 87 years of age.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Mt. Washington Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, watching television and gospel music, helping her neighborhood children, her grandkids, flowers, and gardening. She also helped raise two of her grandchildren: James McNear and the late George McNear.

She united in marriage to Paul Francis McNear who preceded her in death in 1979, and she later united in marriage to Bill Mattingly, who also preceded her in death in 2014.

She is survived by four children: Trecia Buckman (David) of Raywick, Buddy McNear (Gayle) of Campbellsville, Nancy McNear of Somerset, Jolene Bentley and Companion Bo Truax of Campbellsville, and one step-son, Billy Mattingly (Janice) of Campbellsville. 18 grandchildren including Kathy Quintana who was her caregiver for five years, 44 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren, and several great-great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are six siblings: Minnie Pearl McCauley of Lebanon, Aileen Stovall of Shepherdsville, Rusty Whitlock (Carolyn) of Campbellsville, Connie Smith (Donnie) of Mt. Sherman, Roger Whitlock of Raywick, Sarah Buckman of Raywick, and a sister-in-law, Betty Whitlock of St. Francis.

Besides her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nadine Johnson, seven daughters in infancy, one grandson, George McNear, and five siblings: Donnie Whitlock, Larry Whitlock, Ike Whitlock, Ralph Whitlock, and Ruby Lamkin.

The Funeral Service for Gladys Katherine Mattingly will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the L.R. Petty Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Mt. Washington Cemetery.

Bro. Jeff Edwards will officiate.

The family has requested visitation on Sunday, February 23, 2025, from 5 – 8 P.M. and again on Monday evening, February 24, 2025, from 5 – 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
