Helen Greer Chelf

Helen Greer Chelf , 92, died Monday February 26, 2024 at Sayre Christian Village, Lexington, after a long illness.  Born in Adair County, KY,  she was daughter of the late Lee and Gladys Greer,  the second of their eight children.  She will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Valerie Chelf (Milford, Ohio); grandchildren: Landon and Kim Chelf (Cincinnati, Ohio), Sylvia Chelf and Tom Zuchowski (Westerville, Ohio); great-grandchildren Coraline Zuchowski, Micah Zuchowski, Matthew Chelf, Rebecca Chelf; sisters Barbara Walden, Deloris Hicks, Shellie Allen and Janice Ilene Spears; as well as numerous special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Ralph Lowell Chelf; sisters Gloria Jean Brown and Nanetta Rose; and brother Gordon Greer.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many.

She always felt her greatest accomplishments were being a homemaker and mother. After her marriage in 1955, Helen and her husband built a life of service to others, to her country, and to her church.  She was well known for her sewing and quilting skills as well cooking and baking. There were always treats of some sort in the freezer just in case company showed up. She generously shared her quilted blankets, meals, and treats with relatives, neighbors and friends.  Her love of children and particularly babies continued throughout her life and she has assisted with the care of numerous children.  With her marriage she began the life of a military wife, as her husband was active duty in the Navy. The first duty station for the couple was Great Lakes Naval base, and this was the first of many they would move between until Ralph retired in 1965 and they settled in Frankfort.  Helen was a life-long Christian and together, Helen and Ralph were faithful members of the Capital City Christian Church in Frankfort. They served in the Shepherd’s Class, and Helen sang in the choir and worked in the nursery.

Helen will be buried beside her husband in the Roley Cemetery, near the place of her birth.  A graveside service will be held at the Roley Cemetery on Sunday March 3rd at 2pm Eastern.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorials be made in Helen Chelf’s name to one of the following organizations:
