James “Butch” Smith, 81

James Elwood “Butch” Smith of Campbellsville, KY, the son of the late William Richard and Mary Agnes (Rigsby) Smith, was born November 23, 1943 in Louisville and departed this life on Monday, June 9, 2025 in Hodgenville at the Sunrise Manor Nursing Home. He was 81 years of age.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Norma G. (Sapp) Smith who preceded him in death in 2016.

He was a heating and air technician most of his life and was of the Catholic Faith.

He is survived by many friends, including David Wells of Campbellsville.

A graveside service for James Elwood “Butch” Smith will be Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at the Green River Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, 3441 Old Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY.

Bro. Steve Orr will be officiating.

There will NO visitation prior to the service.

Frances Lee Murrah

Frances Lee Murrah of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ray Caldwell and Evelyn Keltner Caldwell, was born March 23, 1929 in Adair County, Kentucky.  She died at 12:45 A.M., Thursday, June 12, 2025 in Campbellsville.   Age: 96

She professed faith in Christ and was a long time member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Frances was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville.

She united in marriage to George Turner Murrah May 7, 1949 and he preceded her in death September 26, 1986.

Frances is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Fran and Doug Vaughn of Campbellsville; two grandchildren:  Jennifer Vaughn Buckman and husband, J. T. and Marshall Cameron Vaughn and wife, Jessi of Campbellsville; four great-grandchildren:  Taylor Vaughn, Alaina Vaughn, Gavin Buckman and Parker Vaughn; special niece, Suzy Houk and husband, Ernie of Campbellsville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister:  James Caldwell, Houston Caldwell, Robert Caldwell, Edwin Caldwell, Wood Caldwell, Thomas Caldwell, Lee Caldwell and Elizabeth Larimore.

Teresa Spurling

Teresa Spurling, 79, of Campbellsville, died June 11, 2025 after a brief illness. She was born May 2, 1946 to Floyd Elwin Phillips and Pearl Mae Benningfield Phillips in Elk Horn, Kentucky.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Campbellsville College in 1970.  In 1979, she received her Masters of Arts from Western Kentucky  University.  She received her Ph.D in Biblical Studies from the American College of Metaphysical Theology in 2003 and in 2006, she received her Ph.D from Capella University.

Teresa was a member of the National Science Teacher’s Association, Kentucky Association of Teacher Educators, The Kentucky Association of College Teachers of Education and the Kentucky Association of National Board Certified Teachers.

Teresa was also a member of the Taylor County Historical Society, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She enjoyed traveling, puzzles and genealogy.

Teresa is survived by her husband of 13 years, Charles Darnell of Campbellsville; her four sons:  Mark Spurling (Kate) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, David Spurling of Lexington, Kentucky, Ronald Spurling (Ana-Lisa) of West Henrietta, New York and Aaron Spurling (Amanda) of Mt. Sterling; ten grandchildren:  Caitlyn Spurling, Parker Spurling, Mark Allan Stinnett, Matthew Spurling, Mackenzie Spurling, Lucas Spurling, Collier Spurling, Edith Spurling, Grace Hollon and Jaxon Spurling; five great-grandchildren:  Acacia Estock, Lorelei Spurling, Jaydon Tyler Stinnett, Hunter Lee Spurling and Elodie Elizabeth Spurling; three brothers and one sister:  Johnny Phillips (Alois) and Pat Phillips (Rhonda) of Campbellsville, Paul Phillips (Tresea) of Elkhorn and Rose Milburn of Louisville.

Teresa was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Jimmie Spurling; her brother, Dwight Phillips and a daughter-in-law, Karen Spurling.
