Fred Phillips

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Fred Phillips, who left us on 12/07/2024.  Born to Fred and Mary Phillips, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He was 79 years old at the time of his death.

A proud graduate of St. Joseph’s College with a bachelor’s degree in management, Fred went on to serve his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He was honored with the Commemorative Medal for Meritorious Service for his dedication and bravery.  After his military service, he built a successful career in retail management and regional management for a large utility company in Midland, where his leadership was respected by colleagues and peers alike.  Later in life, he worked as a mudlogger for Selman and Associates, where he continued to bring his strong work ethic and integrity to every project.

However, his greatest and most cherished role was that of husband and father.  Fred poured his love and energy into providing a wonderful life for his family, always putting them first.  His legacy is one of deep devotion, kindness and a commitment to making lasting memories with those he loved most.

He is survived by his three daughters:  Michelle Cockrell (husband Kip), Danielle Bedingfield (husband Jeremy) and Amber Shugrue (husband Shawn).  He was a proud grandfather to Hunter and Kaden Cockrell, Jonathan Bedingfield (wife, Hartley), Kymberly Bryant (husband Braiden), Isabella Ervin, Harper and Parker Shugrue.  He was also blessed with two great-grandsons, James and Logan.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane Phillips, his parents Fred and Mary Phillips, and his sister, Marilyn Embry.  The honorary pallbearers will be Kymberly Bryant, Isabella Ervin, and Harper Shugrue; while the pallbearers will be Jonathan Bedingfield, Hunter Cockrell, Kaden Cockrell, Parker Shugrue, Kip Cockrell, Jeremy Bedingfield and Shawn Shugrue.

Fred will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his courage, and his strength.  His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Shawn Thomas Sweeney

Shawn Thomas Sweeney of Campbellsville, KY, was born on May 10, 1997, in Campbellsville, and departed this life on December 21, 2024, at his residence. He was 28 years of age.

He was of the Christian Faith and was self-employed doing odd jobs wherever he could. He loved drawing, doing mechanic work, listening to rock music, being outdoors in the sunshine, and especially loved his Mama.

He is survived by his parents: Michael Lee Sweeney and fiancé Tammy Hancock, and Sheree Lynn Brockman and husband Donnie all of Campbellsville. Two brothers and two sisters: Nicholas Depp Glover of Campbellsville, Brook Sheree Sweeney of Lebanon, Michael W. Sweeney, and Rebecca J. Sweeney both of Texas. One nephew: Richard L. McDonald.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Gordon and Sandra Rainwater, John H. Sweeney and Ruby M. Sweeney, and his great-grandmother: Marjorie Cave.

The funeral service for Shawn Thomas Sweeney will be Friday, December 27, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at the L.R. Petty Funeral Home with burial to follow in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Brian Rafferty will officiate.

The family has requested visitation on Friday, December 27, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

The family has asked that memorials be donations to the Funeral Expense Fund and those can be made at the funeral home.

Sonya Kay Mings Akin

Sonya Kay Mings Akin, 71, of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Ray Mings and Monteen Williams Mings was born May 31st, 1953 in Taylor County. She went to be with Jesus on Sunday, December 22nd, 2024 at her home, surrounded by family.
Sonya united in marriage to her longtime sweetheart, Mr. Bruce Akin, in July of 2020, he survives.
Sonya retired from Clarcor after about 18 years of service after spending about 30 years at Fruit of the Loom. She loved the beach. Going to Church and Florida were her two favorite places to go. Sonya professed faith in Christ and she attended Feathersburg First Church of God.

Besides her husband, Sonya is survived by:
Two step-sons: Nathan Akin and his wife, Jacklyn, of Columbia; and Josh Akin and his wife, Sierra, of Campbellsville
Eight step-grandchildren
Two brothers and one sister: Daniel Mings, Manuel Mings, and Susie Carroll, all of Elkhorn
Daughter-in-law, Edna Akin of Somerset
Three nephews and five nieces
Her dog and best friend, Jazzy
A host of other family and friends

Sonya was preceded in death by:
Her step-son, Seth Akin
Her sister-in-law, Cindy Hughes
Her mother-in-law, Martha Cundiff

VISITATION: Thursday, December 26th, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Auberry Funeral Home in downtown Campbellsville.

FUNERAL: Friday, December 27th, 2024 at 11:00 am at Auberry Funeral Home in downtown Campbellsville with burial to follow in the Callahan Cemetery. Bro. Alex Cox will be officiating.

PALLBEARERS: Nathan Akin, Joshua Akin, Bobby Miller, Richie Carroll, Jeremy Mings, and Luke Mings

Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of donations to Hosparus of Green River and may be made at the funeral home.
