Mrs. Dorothy Opal Nelson of Campbellsville was born in Taylor County on November 18, 1937. She was the daughter of the late John James “Jay” and Lizzie Ermine (Dewitt) Wood. She departed this life on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Taylor Regional Hospital being 88 years, 1 month, and 4 days of age. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Gods Grace Church. Mrs. Nelson was a longtime employee of Fruit of the Loom and retired from there after 38 years of service. She was the devoted wife of Mr. Charles Leonard Nelson, who preceded her in death in 2010. Mrs. Nelson was very family-oriented, and loved cooking Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren. They claim she made the best banana pudding and chocolate pie around. She also enjoyed time spent with her church family and loved to sing with them during service.
She leaves to mourn her passing:
Four children: Leon Nelson and wife Debbie, Carolyn Whitlock and husband Rusty, Lisa Miranda and husband David, and Gayla Combs,
Ten grandchildren: Jennifer Watson, Davie Harris, Gary Whitlock, Kevin Whitlock, Wendy Whitlock, Angel Edelen, Carly Waldrep, Jacob Thompson, Jacqueline Graves, and Timmy Combs,
A brother: Virgil Wood and wife Virginia,
Twenty-four great grandchildren,
Nine great-great grandchildren,
And a host of other family members and friends.
Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by four siblings: Faye Graham, Marvin Kirtley, George Wood, and Barbara Agnus Wood; a grandson: Stevie Harris; a great-grandson; one great-great grandson; and two sisters-in-law: Helen Jean Bell and Doris Jean Nelson.
There will be a funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Dorothy Opal Nelson on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Rd, Campbellsville. Bro. Roger Bland will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mt. Washington Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 29, from 5:00-8:00 PM.

Fred Thompson of Campbellsville, son of the late Milton Thompson and Virgie Wright Thompson, was born November 18, 1925 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 12:45 A.M., Thursday, December 25, 2025 in Hodgenville. Age: 100
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Baptist faith.
He was an employee of Campbellsville Industries, worked at Tec Fab Metal Fabrication and also as a carpenter.
Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching old Western movies. He also loved to tell old stories about his experiences throughout his life.
He united in marriage to Macel Salsman December 23, 1948 and she preceded him in death August 4, 2006.
Fred is survived by two sons and one daughter: Rev. Freddy Thompson and wife, Regina of Campbellsville, Garrett Thompson and wife, Tracy of Buffalo and Dian Cox and husband, J. R. of Bowling Green; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Clark and her husband, Charles Clark and one brother and three sisters: Wilson Thompson, Polly Coan, Lottie Allen and Alice Thompson.

Marlena Hunt of Campbellsville, the daughter of the late James Frederick Thompson and Freda Mabel (Underwood) Thompson, was born December 1, 1949, in Larue County, KY, and departed this life on December 22, 2025, in Campbellsville. She was 76 years of age.
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Mt. Roberts Baptist Church. She retired from Taylor Regional Hospital Environmental Services Dept. and was a former employee of Service Cleaners. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning, and was very crafty.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Edward Hunt, on December 9, 2023, and one sister, Betty Ducharme.
She is survived by two daughters: Cheryl Mings and her husband Kevin of Campbellsville, Rita Thompson and her husband Chris of Elizabethtown, and a stepson, Michael Hunt and his wife Laura of Greensburg.
4 grandchildren, Jaycee Mings, Sydney Lara (Alex), Ethan Mings, all of Campbellsville, and Chayse Thompson of Elizabethtown.
Also surviving are three sisters, Linda Skaggs of Elizabethtown, Shelia Diane Wethington of Campbellsville, and Sue Bryant (Gregg) of Elizabethtown. One brother-in-law, Dennis Ducharme of Lexington.
The funeral service for Marlena Hunt will be held Monday, December 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the L.R. Petty Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Brookside Cemetery.
Bro. John Stilts will officiate.
The family has requested visitation on Sunday, December 28, 2025, from 5 – 8 pm at the L.R. Petty Funeral Home.
